In the USA just as an example, this was the year that almost every American became a franchisee or a franchisor. It was the year where experts predicted and correctly too that the US economy would continue to show signs of weakening.  This is what made every other business opportunity virtually beyond exploitation and thus people had to take the only option that was left to them; franchising. The top franchises for 2008 were increased dramatically because every one was starting to realize the potential that is in franchising. This increase was brought about by many units being operated by the top franchisors. In 2008 too, there were many newbie’s that ventured into franchising for the first time. It was the first time that we saw many technology franchises making it to the top franchises for 2008 rankings. Before this, they had just been laggards.

Top franchises for 2008 also saw an influx of women geared franchises. The surprise was that by the end of that fiscal year, there were over 7 million small businesses that were   owned by women entrepreneurs. These businesses were franchised and soon were doing roaring business. The fact that almost everyone went into franchising lessened the effects of the global economy recess. As a result, there were not as severe job losses as were expected then. The top franchises for 2008 were also evident of many franchises that were operated on a basis of semi absentee ownership. The owners figured that the franchise could m run their businesses for them while they would still continue to earn their salaries in their jobs staffing franchises also  went on to gain top spots as the generational gap grew, more need  for staffing the elderly homes arose, bringing with it the need for more staffing franchisee units. 2008 was clearly the franchising year
